APLS 2 Day Refresher

As with the 3 day program, the aim is to increase your confidence and skills in managing paediatric emergencies. 

 

Entrance requirements

 

The APLS 2 Day Refresher course is available for doctors, nurses and paramedics who want to refresh their use of the structured approach for managing ill and injured children. 

 

As this course is designed as a refresher, registration for the program is restricted to candidates who completed a full APLS course in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 only. 

 

This program extends on the knowledge of your initial provider course and is for clinicians who have involvement in the care of critically ill and injured children. If you are uncertain of your eligibility please contact us.

Course components

 

Advanced Paediatric Life Support – A Practical Approach to Emergencies 6^th Edition manual. 

 

Pre-course online learning modules – 8-10 hours. 

 

Two days face-to-face for workshops, skill stations (BLS/ALS and defibrillation, airways management, procedures in chest trauma, intraosseous access) and clinical simulation scenarios for management of cardiac, serious illness and injury. 

 

Mentoring by members of faculty with coaching as required to achieve required standard. 

 

 

Learning outcomes

 

Demonstration of safe management of an arrested child and use of a structured approach for management of critically ill and injured children.

Delivery & assessment methods

 

The APLS learning environment is interactive, practical and supportive. 

 

Before the course, candidates complete the online learning package to revisit key APLS concepts. 

 

Then, during the face-to-face course, candidates consolidate and further their understanding of care in the clinical context through plenaries, skill stations, complex clinical scenario roleplays with small group reflection focused on knowledge application.

 

What supports effective learning in this course are faculty who are credible clinicians, and enjoy supporting others to provide safe care. The culture of the organisation is committed to building a safe learning environment – where questions can be asked and explored and skills can be practiced. 

 

Formative assessment will occur throughout the 2 days, with mentor meetings and coaching as required.

 

 

Outcomes

 

Applying the best available knowledge in complex clinical settings doesn’t always have one correct answer and the face-to-face program is designed to explore these issues. This is so you leave the 2 day program with a safe structure for the care for critically ill and injured children. 

 

Candidates who complete the APLS course will be issued a certificate of completion upon:

 

• Successfully completing the required pre-course APLS online learning modules

• Fully attending the 2 day course

• Demonstration of safe practice for basic life support, advanced life support, defibrillation of an arrested child and use of a structured approach for managing critically ill and/or injured children

 

Accreditation is valid for five years from the date of issue, same as the 3 day APLS program. 

 

 

Course preparation & resources

 

Allowing time for pre-course preparation will maximise the learning you take away from this program. 

 

4-6 weeks of preparation time is recommended to thoroughly read the APLS manual and complete the mandatory pre-course online learning modules. 

 

The pre-course online learning takes approximately 8-10 hours, and should be completed before attending the face-to-face course. 

 

The face-to-face program has been designed to build on and extend the content covered in the pre-course learning.

 

After booking your candidate place, you will be sent a digital copy of our course manual: the Australia and New Zealand 6th edition of 'Advanced Paediatric Life Support – A Practical Approach to Emergencies'. 

 

The manual is supplied in digital format which you can download onto your PC, Mac, Android and Kindle Fire devices.

 

Due to the intensive pre-course demands, candidates are discouraged from registering for a course with less than 3 weeks to prepare.
